How expensive is it to travel around Ireland?  i.e., How much does an average B&B cost?  How much for lunch and dinner at an average restaurant?  What's the price of gasoline?

I'll be going next May. Is that high season?

thanks,
robert

Robert,

May is considered a shoulder season for Ireland meaning prices are not at their highest but are certainly going upward.  Flights can still be found for a reasonable price in May but you will want to look now and buy soon - the cheapest seats are alway staken first.  For some places in Ireland, May is considered already high season and by "some places" I mostly mean Highend hotels.  All the highend fancy castle hotels, for example, will charge a lot of money for a stay in May.  Most sights however, will be open with only a few really out of the way ones closed until June (and sometimes July if they are really small &/or really out of the way)  but the touristy places will be rolling along and though the crowds won't peak until July those areas will still be humming - think Ring of Kerry and Blarney Castle.

Room rates vary by destination and how you are staying.  An average B&B room is 35-45Euro per person sharing.  If you are staying in a room on your own then there is a Suppliment charged (usu 10-15E more) but still less then if two people were staying in the room.  The fancier B&Bs will be more and the older or more simple ones less.  B&Bs in popular places (like middle of Killarney town) can charge higher rates than those that are outside of towns or way out in the country.  Same goes for restaurants and bars in terms of charging for food - the out of the way places can be a lot cheaper then the ones right in town.  Lunch averages 10-15E for food and a drink (tea, soda or coffee - beer is more) and Dinner can run you anywhere from 15E per plate on up.  Gasoline is pricey and is charged by the liter.  Last time I was in Ireland it was going ffrom 1.10 to 1.20s per liter (~2.5L in a gallon) but the good news is that your little rental car can go and go on a tank of gas.  You won't need to fill up more than a few times at the most and that's with a lot of driving.

Hope this helps,

Wendy

Thanks for the info, Wendy!  Anyone know the current gas prices in Ireland?  Can't be much higher than here in the States right now I assume.

cimo,

Katherine has a page that talks about fuel in her Save segment.  TheAA.com web site also has a tab for the most recent cost of fuel in Europe, including Ireland but you'll need to do the conversion from Euros (and liters) yourself.  I've found that to know what you pay in US is fine but stick to measuring in liters as your rental car will also tell you how far you are driving in liters.  Or, better yet, try not to think on it too much at all!  For a two week trip (and a good bit of driving) we ususally fill up 3, maybe 4 times at the most.  That's probably close to 2000 miles of driving for us - a lot for little Ireland.

Cheers,

Wendy
