When I visited Ireland about four years ago, I was stunned that there was no phone in my room. I never even thought to ask before making reservations.

The lovely room was over a lovely restaurant so when the restaurant was closed, there was no one around to help if needed (a concern for retiree like me who was traveling alone part of the trip). If I needed help during the night, or got locked out of the room, I would have been out of (Irish) luck!

Have things changed since then?

There are very few places like that in Ireland - where there is nobody around at night, other of course than in self-catering accommodation. All hotels will have phones in your room, though B&Bs generally won't.

It may be that in these days when everyone over the age of about 5 seems to have a mobile phone the need for phones in rooms is reducing rapidly - apparently the actual use of phones in hotel rooms is in terminal decline and has been for some time, people just use their mobiles or make calls using their computers.

It may not be true absolutely everywhere, but it is just assumed that everyone in Ireland has a mobile, so I'd say if anything has changed, or will change, it is that you are going to be less rather than more likely to have a phone in your room in the future.
