guillaume,
Lucky for you Katherine has already addressed this issue on another page here on her web site! Check out How To Behave in Ireland for the exact answer to your exact question. (See? It's wasn't a stupid question afterall!) A smile and a nod or "nice day, isn't it?" is often enough to get a conversation going when meeting strangers. When you meet someone formally ("Hello, my name is guillaume." ) is when you will shake their hand in greeting. Otherwise you usually just get a "How's it goin'?" and end up chatting from there without any physical contact. If you know someone in Ireland and are being introduced around then you will handshake or, if you are close friends or family, will you get the kiss on the cheek. Enjoy your visit to Ireland! Safe travels, Wendy |
