My husband and I have a rental car from Dublin 18 August for 12 days. We like scenery, fun times, character pubs and good food. We are 50ish, I expect b&b's are a good way to go. Any suggestions for a general direction and itinerary.

Thank you so much for your answer! :) It´s good to know that the Delphi Adventure Centre doesn´t only offer the long courses but that you can rent canoes for a day or half a day, too. I think we´ll see if and how we can get there when we arrived in Ireland but I would really like to share the excitement your son feels there ;)

We are thinking about visiting Kilkenny (apparently not for canoeing [rolleyes] ). I already read through the information in this site but do you have any special advice what to do or visit there?

Thanks again!

I don't know if you already saw it, but I have a whole section about how to go about tracing your roots in Ireland. There is a lot there about how to get going and about the various records you can consult.

It can be a very complicated thing, or fairly simple. To be honest an awful lot depends on who your ancestors were - if they were called say McCarthy or Lynch, then it's going to be hard since there are hundreds of different families with those names in Cork, whereas if they had a more unusual surname it wlll be much easier.

On finding living relatives: With an unusual surname, you could just look up the Irish phone book, which is extremely easy to search and gives you full addresses so you could write to people before you go to enquire whether they are related. This is pointless with the more common surnames.

Anyone setting out on this sort of fishing expedition should be aware though that not many Irish people know about ancestors who emigrated prior to, say, as far back as their grandparents time, so realistically we're talking prior to the 20th century. There just isn't as much interest in tracing their roots among the descendants of those who didn't emigrate as there is among the descendants of those who did.

On finding graves: There is a wonderful site with a searchable list of gravestone inscriptions from more than 800 Irish cemeteries, and it would certainly be worth searching there.

Good luck with your searching!

Mmm. November and gardens is not a wonderful mix I'd have to say. Not a lot is growing and few gardens are looking anything like their best at that time. In fact quite a few open only from April/May to the end of October so there are some you would not be able to visit at all.

If you really are interested in gardens I'd rethink November if at all possible. Assuming you want to avoid the high season, May would be a good month - you get the last of the Spring and the beginning of Summer plants - or September when many of the Summer plants are still in flower and the beginning of Autumn is bringing its own colour.

That's interesting, we were just talking about this the other day!

It sure does vary a LOT. In Malahide last week (I don't know the name of the pub) it was €11.40 for a pint of Guinness and a pint of Smithwicks, presumably they are much the same price as each other so that would be €5.70 for a pint of Guinness :o[mad]

It came as something of a shock to my friend who was buying and, more accustomed to Kilkenny prices, had plonked a €10 note down assuming he was covered. There was a Neil Young concert on locally that day, so maybe the prices were hiked up to take advantage of the crowds, I don't know, but it certainly was an expensive couple of pints.

I think your best bet is probably the phone book.

Looking up people in the UK phone book is something of a frustrating experience, since the BT site, and others that list numbers, require you to know the post code or an almost exact address much of the time - fine in most cases, but not in your's.

When you have less exact information I find that the 118.com site is about the easiest to search - though it can still take some time trying various different regions.

I hope your friend has an uncommon name though!

Dear Paola,

Everything Katherine states is true. We traveled with our sons (aged 12 and 14) last summer and felt very welcome everywhere. We dined in pubs almost every night and stayed around for trad music when possible.

Our boys are seasoned travelers and well behaved, so that helps. We were always prepared to leave, if asked. We also did not stay out too late, in general because we were exhausted from sightseeing, but also so as not to put the publican in an awkward position.

Of course, your 18 year old niece is old enough to order her own pint, but I will wager that no one will say a word about the 13 and 15 year old girls as long as you keep it low key and just enjoy the evening.

Hope you have a GREAT time!

Cheers,

Seán

Hi DoChara!

Yeah I was looking into the finer details of the trip I was planning for this leg and I'm now thinking of extending it. I want to go to Slane and check out all the things there - slane castle, bru na boinne etc, and now i'm thinking of detouring to Kingscourt and the Dun na Ri forest park. I figure work this into a day and stay somewhere near there then make another day trip up to Belfast.

I want to be in both Dublin and Belfast during a weekend (so like thur-mon for each) so we've got some time to get there :)

Thanks for you help :)
