The Burlington Hotel is Sold

It's really not just a hotel the Burlington, it's an institution and for both Dubliners and regular visitors to the city it has been a meeting place, a home from home and a centre of social life for years.

The cast of characters who passed through it doors and have each made it their own are many and varied. Each August it is full of horsey folk from all over Ireland in town for the Horse Show, after international rugby matches it is always packed solid and the place where you are certain to eventually meet anyone you know who's in town, in December it's full of Icelandic tourists over to do their Christmas shopping, just about every organisation, society and business in Dublin has had some kind of social event there.

I've stayed there, eaten there, sat in the foyer next to to top business people, famous stars and on one occasion a large party from one of Dublin's most notorious crime families celebrating a child's confirmation. I've been to weddings, dinner dances, product launches, seminars and conferences there. I've dropped in for afternoon tea and left the night club the worse for wear in the wee hours of the morning. Me and half the population of Ireland.

It sits on almost 4 acres of prime land in probably the most desirable part of the city and that's the reason for its €288 million price tag. It'll come down soon and be replaced with offices and apartments which will be no doubt wonderful but it's loss will be a significant one for Dublin.

You can still stay there in 2007 - it'll be your last chance.

Terrible shame about the Burlington. I've covered the Dublin Horse Show for an American equestrian magazine, and some of the most memorable evenings (well, the pieces that I can remember) were spent in the Residence Bar, with the show's other media members, riders, and the rest!
