Holidaymakers Come, but Mostly They Go

For the first time people leaving Ireland for a holiday abroad exceeded the number arriving here on vacation, according to figures released to-day by the Central Statistics Office (PDF).

Apparently 1.47 million people visited Ireland, up 6% on the same time last year, while 1.57 million trips abroad were made, an increase of 17%. Well, we do like a little break away.

There is an interesting little nugget in that report. Although visitors numbers are up by just 6% over the same period last year, the amount those visitors spent has gone up 12%. So, are we getting wealthier visitors or is everything just getting more expensive? Minister Seamus Brennan has welcomed this increase in spend - I wonder did the visitors welcome it quite as much?

Money doesn't seem to be an issue for the Irish holiday makers though, they spent a whooping €1.14 billion on their trips abroad,
