Getting Older in Ireland has Some Advantages
It's always been a pretty cool boon of becoming a pensioner in Ireland that you automatically qualify for free travel on all public transportation - trains, buses, Luas trams, even some ferry services. It got better this week when those who are entitled to free travel in the South had their benefit extended to include travel in Northern Ireland, and vice versa.
Over 600,000 people have cards which entitle then to travel under the scheme, which is available to all those resident in Ireland aged over 66 - you don't have to be a citizen to qualify, just to live here.
I've always thought this was one of the more decent gestures the government make towards older people. Personally, assuming I live to get my hands on my pass, I intend to spend my older years burning up the roads and rails of Ireland for as long as I can stagger onto a bus or train.
