"He entered Davy Byrnes. Moral pub."
James Joyce wrote those words in his novel Ulysses, and Dublin's most famous literary pub, Davy Byrne's has been patronised by many other writers down the years, among them Patrick Kavanagh, Anthony Cronin and Brendan Behan. Some of them might to-day be surprised to find that many customers come as much to enjoy the excellent food as a pint of Guinness.
The most popular items on the bar menu are traditional dishes, simply prepared using the best quality Irish ingredients. Irish stew, Oysters with brown bread, Beef & Guinness Pie are all firm favourites. There is also a selection of pasta dishes, sandwiches and salads, many of which feature seafood for which Davy Byrne's is well known.
Inside the wood and glass paneled entrance doors is an authentic Dublin pub, but one with an unusual amount of art in its decor. There are murals depicting Dublin in Joyce's time, some dating back to the 1940's, and sculpture too.
