Eating Out in Ireland

Choosing a place to eat in a strange country can be something of a lottery, what looks good on the outside may not always deliver. What you really need is up to date local knowledge - and that is what you get here.

Choosing a Restaurant in Ireland

At the top end, there are some very, very good restaurants, up with the best anywhere.

The mid-range is unpredictable, with some excellent places but plenty of ordinary, even poor, restaurants serving food that is tired and lifeless. Visitors are particularly vulnerable to finding themselves in such places, partly because of lack of local knowledge but also because many of the hotels on the 'tour bus circuit' are ones that have done little to update their menus in years.

For those on a tight budget, care is needed because at the lower end of the market things can get very dodgy indeed. Pubs are often a good option, find the best regarded pub for food in a town and you will probably be on a winner. And when money is really tight, nothing fills you up like a great 'Fish Supper' from a good takeaway!

Our Restaurant Recommendations

Price Ranges

Budget: A satisfying meal for less than €20 per person, often quite a lot less.

Mid Range: A good three course meal with a bottle of wine for two people for less than €75-80.

High End: The sky is the limit!

The recommendations on these pages are all for restaurant, cafes, bars and delis we know are very good, in fact they are the best you will find in each area. We know this either because we have eaten in them ourselves, sometimes regularly, or because people whose opinions we know and trust have told us so.

We have coaxed, cajoled and sweet talked people we know in every part of Ireland to come up with the best places to eat in all price ranges where they live - places they eat themselves and would recommend to others without reservation.

None of these restaurants pay us to be listed, we don't accept that sort of listing.

Each area is covered in a single page, with recommendations in three price ranges. These pages are designed to be printed out and taken with you when you visit an area, so that you always have a ready assortment of good places to eat.
