Baboró International Arts Festival for Children

This is a unique festival in the Irish calendar, aimed squarely at kids and at getting shcools and families from thoughtout the West and beyond involved in a vast array of events that cover just about every aspect of the arts.

From relatively small beginings in 1998, the festival has grown massively – last year more that 40,000 children attend the festival at some point and with a bigger festival than ever planned this year the only way that figure can go is up.

The programme is both broad and deep, encompassing music, dance, theatre, literature, film, puppetry, story telling and visual arts, with workshops, performances, discussions and exhibitions running in venues throughout Galway city. There are events aimed at children aged from three years to 16 years, and most will be enjoyed just as much by the adults they bring along!

With so much going on, it’s not easy to pick out highlights, but the spectacular dance show, Clouds, a co-production with Spanish company Aracaladanza and Sadler’s Wells has to be one.  The dance programme also includes White Caps, a jaw-dropping fusion of film and explosive Bboy and break dance, and Globe, an exciting fusion of music, dance and percussion form around the world.

Acting Up! is a mix of storytelling and song that will captivate babies and delight adults,

The theme of the 2010 festival is Illumination and the streets of Galway will light up with the opening show Priceless, an outdoor installation along Quay Street  presented by Das Papiertheater from Germany.  Des Papiertheater will  stage a dance and shadow show ‘I Spy with my Little Eye’, a visual game that plays with shadow and illusion through dance and amazing movement and the imaginative use of paper.
