Friday, January 20th, 2017 to Sunday, January 22nd, 2017
This is not really a festival, more a year long series of events, which since 1981 has taken a theme for each year and presented Classical music of the highest quality around it.
The Midwinter Festival is the core event, with three days of fantastic music and other events bringing music lovers from Ireland and abroad to the great festival city of Galway.
Subtitled 'Prodigy' the festival in 2017 focuses on child prodigies, with each work written before or by the age of eighteen.
In keeping with this theme the festival sees the first Irish performance by 11 year old Alma Deutscher, a remarkable English composer, pianist and violinist who wrote her first sonata aged six and her first full length opera at ten.
Early works by Mozart, Mendelssohn, Prokofiev, Schubert, Mahler and others also appear on the programme.
