Knock Airport
It isn't the first place you would think to put an international airport - over 600 ft up a mountain, miles from the nearest decent sized town in the heart of one of the most sparsely populated regions of Ireland.
The airport was the brain child of the late Monsignor James Horan, parish priest of Knock, and when first mooted was met with derisory comments about the airport on the "foggy, boggy mountain".
Nevertheless, it was built and today about half a million passengers a year pass through the airport. That number is set to expand considerably and a business park located close by is providing much needed local employment. Monsignor Horan would be well pleased.
Flying into Knock is quite an experience, coming in low over the hills of Mayo with stupendous views (fog and cloud allowing) over a gorgeous part of the country.
We have independent reviews of recommended in Limerick city and Galway.
