Using the rail network can be a good way to tour Ireland, though it has limitations and will almost certainly need to be combined with bus travel.

There are good train connections from Dublin to other cities and towns, but links between cities other than Dublin are patchy to say the least.

There are limitations on touring Ireland by public transport – train cover is patchy and you are a prisoner of bus time tables.

However it can be a very cost effective way to tour, especially if you are eligible for one or other of the cut rate transport cards available.

There are a number of discount cards for travel on bus and train in Ireland and Northern Ireland, but whether or not these will save you money depends on how much you will use them.
