Away from the crowds around the Cliffs of Moher there is a quieter but no less beautiful stretch of coastline in Clare, around peaceful Loop Head.
It is a sparsely populated area which will reward those prepared to get off the beaten track and it’s lighthouse can even be rented and stayed in as the ultimate getaway retreat.
One of the oldest lighthouses in the world, the light from Hook Head has been shining its beacon more or less continuously for over 800 years.
Since then its gone from being a simple fire lit by a monk, through being oil and coal powered to today’s automated electric light.

Abbeyleix is a planned town, built in the 18th century by the 2nd Viscount de Vesci, whose descendants still live in nearby Abbeyleix House.
It’s worth a stop to visit one of the best pubs in Ireland and will be greatly improved when a long promised motorway finally relieves it of traffic congestion.

Fuel in Ireland is expensive, and it’s even more expensive in Northern Ireland. This is partly down to international oil prices, but also to heavier government taxes on fuel than in other countries.
