The Barrow Valley is a quiet and unspoiled area, much loved by walkers and little visited by tourists.
The river that meanders though is popular with cruise boats but also means there are miles of riverside paths waiting to be explored.
Inistioge is a romantic village beautifully located on the banks of the River Nore in South Kilkenny which has been the location for several movies and TV shows.
High on a hill overlooking the town, Woodstock Estate has 1000 acres of walks and extensive gardens, though the house that once stood there is now in ruins.

Abbeyleix is a planned town, built in the 18th century by the 2nd Viscount de Vesci, whose descendants still live in nearby Abbeyleix House.
It’s worth a stop to visit one of the best pubs in Ireland and will be greatly improved when a long promised motorway finally relieves it of traffic congestion.

Fuel in Ireland is expensive, and it’s even more expensive in Northern Ireland. This is partly down to international oil prices, but also to heavier government taxes on fuel than in other countries.
On the positive side however, rental cars here tend to be new and quite economical to run and there are some other ways you can save a little money.
