Stunningly located on a cliff-top overlooking Bantry Bay, this course will test not just your golf but your fitness! The walk is bracing and the course is known for its many tricky blind shots.
The original nine holes were designed by Eddie Hackett in 1975 and the course was extended to 18 holes in 1997 by Christy O'Connor. Fourteen of the holes overlook the sea and have panoramic views accross Sheep's Head Bay to the Beara mountains and the Mizen Peninsula. Like other shore side parkland courses the wind can be reminiscent of links courses, especially on the more exposed holes, and will have an impact on how you play.
It is a very varied course which can be unexpectedly testing. The very short par 3 9th for example may look a doodle, at just 126 yards long, but it is very exposed to the elements and on a windy day presents a serious challenge. The 487yd long 11th, curving to the right from tee to green and with threatening rough hard to the right edge of the fairway and clevely placed bunkers to the left, is more obviously difficult. It demands versatility and careful thought and acheiving par here is just cause for hearty self-congratualations!
You will be lucky to make par at Bantry Bay, low scores are not common, but golfers of every level will enjoy the sport and it is a very friendly club.
If you find it tiring to walk a typical 18 holes, be sure to hire a cart or at least a motorised trolley here - it is quite a testing walk. Both are available from the clubhouse but it is a good idea to reserve one when you book your time.
Green Fees: €35 - €35
