Once one of the busiest narrow-gauge railways in Ireland, mainly due to its serving the local coal mines, the line is no longer used for transport. Instead it has been the focus of loving reconstruction by local enthusiasts who brought it from virtual ruin to its wonderful condition to-day.

While the trip on the train is the highlight of a visit, looking around the old engine house, the workshops and viewing the old black and white photographs of the line when it was in full use gives a fascinating glimpse into the history of the line, and of rail transport in general.

There are three locomotives, all still undergoing restoration as funds allow. The whole place is a testement to enthusiasm - run more on love and interest than money.

Special events are organised regularly, such as a Halloween Ghost Train and Christmas Santa Specials, there is a small shop in the old Booking Office and trains run on demand.

The railway is open every day from Easter to late October at other times by appointment or if there is a special event running.
