If it's outdoor activity you are after there can scarcely be a better place anywhere in the world to be active than Delphi. It's location is nothing short of stupenous - set on a mountain in a remote part of Connermara, close to the calm waters of Killary Harbour, Ireland's klargest fjord, as well as one of the world's best surfing beaches. Even those who go purely for the activities cannot fail to pause regularly to gaze with sheer awe at their surroundings.
Right from the start I'll own up to a bit of a bias here - my son has, for the last couple of years, attended a summer camp at Delphi, and I don't think he has enjoyed anything in his life even nearly as much. He's going back this year and is counting the hours, never mind the days. I am naturally well disposed towards a place that makes him that happy!!
Activities Available
The choice of activities at Delphi is extremely extensive, with water activities including kayaking, surfing, Canadian canoeing and wind surfng, mountain activities ranging from relatively unegetic hill-walking in gorgeous surroundings to rock climbing and abseiling for the more adventurous and fun activities in the woods on the zip wire or high and low ropes.
Everything is very professionally run and supervised by qualified instructors. As well as the residential camps - which I obviously highly recommend - they can put to-gether special programmes of any duration from half a day to a week for families and groups, with activities to suit the needs and abiliities of each.
While the campers sleep in relatively basic but comfortable accommodation, there is no need for others to rough it at all - there are luxurious suites and rooms with all the comfort of a very good hotel. There is an on-site spa with invigorating seaweed baths and beauty and massage therapies - after a couple of days on the mountains the latter in particular are most welcome.
Visiting Delphi
This is a real get away from it all place. The location is remote, mobile phone reception is patchy to say the least and television has been banished from bedrooms at least.
It's the perfect way of leaving the everyday world behind - when you are concentrating on staying upright on your surf board on the Atlantice waves, with the 12 Ben mountains soaring up behind you, the world of work will seem a million miles away and you won't give a hoot about TV.
The best way to get there is by car, but there are buses from Galway which will leave you relatively close - contact Delphi for options on making the last couple of miles of the journey.
