A relatively new and beautifully maintained course on the shores of Lough Ree in the very centre of Ireland, Glasson provides enjoyable golf at every level.
Designed by Christy O'Connor, the first half of the course is built around Lough Ree and the second nine overlooks Killanure Bay, lovely surroundings that will surprise those who think the midlands dull.
The holes are long and testing, rewarding accurate play and big hitters, especially when playing the back tees. The course is a little uneven, with some stunningly good holes but a few that are a little plain. Although a parkland course, Glasson is in an open situation and is not heavily wooded so the wind can have a significant impact on how you approach your play.
The 14th hole, a par 5, is really world class, with the elevated tee overlooking a natural amphitheatre and the downhill fairway doglegging as it follows the line of the bay. The small green has water on both sides and demands accuracy - make par here and your day will be made! The par 3 15th may seem a welcome shorter hole and has a stunning view from the tee, but it will test your mettle - fail to make the green here and you will know what trouble means!
A very professionally run club with excellent practice grounds and good visitor facilities.
