Part of a very luxurious country club, this parkland course played host to the Ryder Cup in 2006.
There are two championship courses, the carefully groomed Palmer Course and the wilder and more watery Smurfit Course, both designed by Arnold Palmer and each providing its own unique test.
Both are immaculatly groomed and always in perfect order and well deserve their reputation of being among the most beautiful parkland courses in Europe. For all their charms they can be a disappointment to visitors from the USA, who often comment that they might just as well be in Florida were it not for the lack of sun.
The Palmer course is the older of the two and the one where the Ryder cup will be played. There are really no weak holes here but the par 5 7th stands out, a double dogleg with sand, rough and water on all sides and a green perched on an island in the river. There is another even trickier to reach island green at the 16th, where absolute accuracy is the only hope on the approach shot. It will be interesting to see the pros tackle these!
There is water everywhere on the Smurfitt course too but with imaginatively placed options for avoiding it.
The K Club is not a cheap day out by any standards, but a must for great golf in a magnificent location and it is a thrill to play the Ryder Cup course.
The off course facilites here are second to none, with everything you would expect from a top of the range and very expensive country club resort.
Green Fees: €165 - €250, group discounts available.
