Another of Ireland's classic links courses, established in 1892, Lahinch is enowned for its fast, firm greens and is a particularly friendly and welcoming place to play.
The renowned Old Course, with its blind shots and threatening sand dunes, has been wonderfully restored over the last few years. Both it and the shorter Castle Course are impeccably maintained but without spoiling the natual surroundings - or disturbing the resident goats! The goats act as a barometer for golfers - if they are grazing on the open the day will be fine, but if they are huddled close to the clubhouse get the rain gear out.
Two of Ireland's most famous holes, which also feature in lists of the best golf holes in the world, are played one after the other on the Old Course and will possibly be the most testing back-to-back holes you will ever play.
At the par 5 5th, aka the 'Klondyke', the second shot must cross over a gigantic dune to an invisible green some 200 yards distant, a green which rolls away from front to rear. The 6th hole, or the "Dell", is a short par 3, but with a blind green tucked neatly between two dunes. Luck inevitably plays a part but is not the whole story.
The Castle Course is an enjoyable links course but not as interesting or testing as the older one.
