A famous links course close to Dublin, Portmarnock is surrounded on three sides by water with the course set in lovely scenery. The Irish Open has been held here many times and the course while very challanging is known as a fair test for golfers of all standards.

The course is laid out in a serpentine fashion which means that after each hole you change direction and are dealing with completely different wind conditions. There is much to recommend hiring a caddie here as familiarity with the course is at least half of the secret to success (call ahead, they can be scarc

The final five holes are legendary, all of them have featured on one or another list of the best holes in golf.

Green Fees: €165 – €190

Warning! This club still does not admit women as full members, though women are allowed to play A recent court case upheld the clubs stance on this and it is the cause of considerable controversy in Ireland at the moment. They also segregate visitors and members in the clubhouse, which some find a tad ungracious, especially given the not inconsiderable green fees.
