It's not easy to get to Rosapenna, perched at the very top of Co Donegal, but well worth the journey.

The original course here was staked out by Tom Morris, a four time winner of the British Open, in 1891 and by 20 years later a full 18 holes had been cut through the sand and grass and was already gaining a wide reputation.

While the front nine of this course is still more or less as it was back then, for the most part this is a brand new course, with the back nine holes of the Old Tom Morris links recently updated by Pat Ruddy who also designed the new Sandy Hills course which opened in 2003.

While the old course has its staunch fans, the newer one, while different in nature, if anything surpasses it with not a single weak hole. It is a tough test, the narrow fairways bending and twisting between high dunes and buffeted by cross winds coming in from the Atlantic, but an exhilarating experience for any links lover. It was built as a championship course, but there are several tee positions at each hole and it is playable by golfers of all levels.

Everywhere at Rossapenna you will be surrounded by truly stunning scenery. The course is owned by the adjoining Rosapenna Hotel which has been comprehensively updated and provides a very high standard of accommodation. The recently opened new clubhouse at the courses has top notch facilities and a good restaurant.

The green fess are excellent value for courses of this quality. If you do make the trip this far north be sure to play both!

Green fees: Old Tom Morris Links €50, Sandy Hills Links €75
