Acknowledged as one of one of the best, some would say the best, links courses in the world, serious bunkers and high winds make just getting around the Championship course at all a real test at times.

Many people say that the front nine here are possibly the best nine holes in the world, set alongside the shore, with the ever present sound of crashing waves, high dunes, testing obstacles and spectacular scenery. The doglegged 5th demands both accuracy in both direction and length, in the face of often fearsome winds and the stretch ends with a very tricky uphill shot from the 9th tee which if it goes as planned will leave you in a dilemma over whether to hit long or short to avoid the terrifying sand in front of the green.

The last nine is no cakewalk either, with the difficult 15th catching and punishing weaks shots from those who are begining to tire and the last hole with its cleverly positioned bunkers keeping you on your toes right to the end.

The Annesley course is considerably less demanding (and less expensive!) but also offers an enjoyable game.

The club is set in a lovely location at the foot of the Mourne Mountains. There are excellent recently updated clubhouse facilities including a restaurant and bar, but this is a club that takes itself seriously and the social action is quieter than in some other places.

Green Fees: Championship Course: £50-130 Annesley Course: £12-35. Book early. Note prices are in sterling.

Warning! The terrain here is varied and the course is quite a stiff walk, but there are no carts available, in fact the use of motorised buggies of any kind is strictly prohibited. Be aware of this if you normally use one.
