Byrne Perry Summer SchoolFounded in 1995 with a remit of examining Irish history and literature from the eighteenth century onwards, the school broadly considers topics around how the last two centuries of Irish history have shaped contemporary Ireland, north and south.

The following refers to the 2008 festival and is left here to give you a flavour of what to expect.

The theme for 2008 is "From Murder Machine to Modern Education" and speakers will include Lord Paul Buw, professor of Politics at Queen's University Belfast, who will deliver the opening address and Senator Joe O'Toole who will give the annual Gordon Wilson memorial lecture.

Other lectures will be given by Catriona Ruane, Minister for Education in Northern Ireland, Danny O'Hare, former president of DCU and Ciaran Sugrue of the University of Cambridge.

It is one for the serious student of politics, but if that is where your interests lie this event provides a peerless opportunity to meet with like minded people and exchange views. The festival takes place in Gorey Co Wexford and a number of fringe events of a lighter nature will take place locally.
