Galway Film Fleadh
For the 20th year the best in new and classic Irish and World cinema will be on view in Galway City. As well as a programme of short Irish movies there will be many overseas contributions, seminars and public lectures, interviews and workshops.
An increasingly important part of the Fleadh is the Film Fair, taking place from the 10th to the 12th in 2008, which puts filmmakers in touch with local and international producers, directors and financiers. There is also a Pitching Award, screenwriters are asked to submit a one page pitch with a decent financial prize on offer.
Among the highlights in 2008 are a screening of "Darfur Now", with its director Ted Braun on hand to introduce it and answer questions.
Jessica Lange will there and several of her films will be shown, including Bonneville, All That Jazz and Big Fish.
Among the Irish films which will premiere at Galway are Anton, an gripping thriller set in Northern Ireland in the '70’s; Alarm, a contemporary thriller directed by Gerry Sternbridge, and Vox Humana directed by Bob Quinn, which is the music-based story of a homeless man and the 70 strong Galway Baroque Singers.
The winer of the 2008 Oscar for Best International Documentary, Taxi to the Dark Side, directed by Alex Gibney, will also be shown.
Other features include two Polish films, Stanislow Mucha's "Nadzieja" and Andrei Wadja's "Kathyn". Winner of the Audience Award at the Sundance Festival, "No 2" directed by Toa Fraser will also get a screening in Galway.
Peter O' Toole will be there to recieve the annual Irish Tribute award.
Galway will buzz, with lots of entertainment in pubs and on the streets to while away the time between movies. The really hardy will stay on for the Arts Festival which takes place immediately afterwards.
The Fleadh was the location of the World Premiere of "Once", which went on to win an Oscar for Best Original Song in 2008, so you never know what treasure you might find in Galway!
