Eigse Carlow
Note: Details below refer to the previous event. Updated information for this year will be published here as soon as it becomes available.
There is a strong emphasis on visual arts here, but there is also comedy, a literary programme, music, street entertainment and many 'fringe' events in local pubs.
The details below refer to the 2008 Festival.
It started as a small festival some 28 years ago but has grown into on of Ireland's largest and most popular Arts Festivals, along with the rapid growth of Carlow itself.
In 2008 there is a number of collaborations between artists working in different discopline, including choreograher Rex Levitatas with composer Micheál Ó'Súilleabháin who have worked together on a new dance piece and Altan and the Carlow Young Artists Choir who will stage a concert in Carlow Cathedral.
Another highlight of this year’s festival is 'Shopped', presented by the Wired Aerial Theatre from the UK. Lauded worldwide for their inimitable bungee assisted dance works, they will astound audiences as they scale the walls of Carlow Shopping Centre.
Almost all events are free of charge and there is a strong community involvement, especially from children from local schools. The outdoor Party in the Park on the Sunday of the festival is a great family event and well worth making an effort to get to if you are traveling with kids.
