Calves Week 2008
Named as a tongue in cheek reference to the famous yachting event Cowes Week, this is a not to be missed event for lovers of sailing and enjoyable even for those with only a passing interest in boats.
The regatta here has been pretty much an annual event since 1884, the big attraction at the time being the fierce rivalry and epic battles between the local fleet of fishing yawls and the visitors from Baltimore, Sherkin, Cape Clear and Crookhaven.
Schull is in a very beautiful part of West Cork and is a charming village popular with visitors at the best of times, but for this week it is thronged and the place is humming. There are cruiser and dinghy racing every day, including an overnight race from Crosshaven via the Fastnet rock.
The event culminates with a regatta on the last Sunday, when the harbour will be a wonderful sight, filled with boats at full sail.
All the hotels and pubs have music and other events throughout the week, and the event is as legendary for its on shore partying as for anything that takes place on the water.
