The King at Puck FairEach August during one of Europes oldest fairs, Puck Fair in Kilorglin Co Kerry, a wild mountain goat is crowned King and elevated to a high perch where he overlooks three days of raucous celebration.

The fair dates back at least 400 years though it is probably much older and of pagan origin. Some would say that much of the behaviour the caprine king looks down on today has a distinctly pagan feel to it still!

The crowning of a new king is celebrated with music, dancing, street theatre and fireworks. There is a traditional horse fair in the town and much for children to enjoy ..... during the day. At night it all tends to get a bit drunken and can be somewhat overwhelming.

Among those providing musical entertainment in 2008 is Meteor Award winner Mundy, who will play a free open air gig on Monday night.
