St Patrick's Festival 2008
This is easily the biggest St Patrick's Day festival in Ireland, if not the most traditional. It's a massive event, a huge party taking place mostly on the streets of Dublin, with more than 4000 performers involved and an audience that will top 1 million people over the five days.
The parade on the day itself is the central event - if you want to watch it take up your position early.
But be warned, for some reason it always seems to rain that day, at least that is my abiding memory of it! If you want to be sure of a good view and shelter from the rain, grandstand seats are available for 60 Euro, but otherwise attendance at the parade is free.
As usual there will be groups taking part not just from Ireland, but from elsewhere in Europe and from India, Africa and the USA. It is a truly multi-cultural event. Expect huge costumed characters, colourful costumes and lots of theatre.
Elsewhere there will be a massive funfair in Merrion Square, an international Food Festival at St Patrick's Cathedral, many musical events thoughout the city and lots of street performers just about everywhere you look.
There is more information and links here to other St Patrick's Day events around the country.
