Galway Early Music Festival
Note: Details below refer to the previous event. Updated information for this year will be published here as soon as it becomes available.
The Early Music Festival has become a popular fixture in Galway's busy festival schedule, and is assuredly not an event that is just for muscial puritans!
Details for 2009, including dates, are not yet available. The information below refers to the 2008 festival, but will give you a good idea of that this festival is about.
This years theme is the sensuality of music, and will invoke not just the sense of hearing but those of smell, taste and sight too. Some events will be held in candlelight, a concert of bawdy songs will be enjoyed while those attending tuck in to tankards of ale and in other events performers will be costumed in keeping with the musical period.
I FURIOSI, a quartet which includes a soprano, two violinists and a violincellest, present a show of Baroque music called "Addicted to Love" featuring works by Handel, Geminiani, Dowland amd other which celebrate carnal love, forbidden love, unrequited love and pure, unbridled lust.
The Moonfish Theatre Company will stage a medieval mystery play, Noah’s Ark, an Irish approach to a 14th century English play with fun, music and a big part for the audience!
A wonderful variety show at Athenry Castle will bring festival events to a close, with young Irish based ensemble Morisca presenting a programme of high and low music after which the audience will enjoy a finger-food feast of Medieval dishes with the exotic flavours of the Eastern herbs and spices which were so popular at the time.
The Festival has a relaxed and friendly atmosphere and makes excellent use of the medieval town of Galway and the artistic and culturalrichness of the area.
