The Merriman Summer School
If you are planning to attend a summer school in Ireland for the first time, Merriman is the one to pick. It has plenty for anyone with an interest in Irish culture to enjoy and is an extremely friendly and sociable affair.
As well as paying homage to the 18th century poet Brian Merriman, the school aims to encourage interest in all aspects of Irish culture - language, history, literature, dance, music - and in particular the culture of the the Munster area.
The theme in 2008, "From Brian Ború to Paddy Hillery: continuity and change in Irish history and society.", acknowledges the legacy of Paddy Hillery, a former president of Ireland and enthhusiastic supporter and patron of the Merriman School, who died earlier this year. A special commemorative event will review his achievements and legacy and the era in which he lived and worked.
Workshops, lectures, debates and discussions will cover topics as diverse as Sexuality in Modern Society, in a discussion led by Carmel Wynne of The Irish Times; Ennis and Quin Franciscan Friaries and the Gaelic manuscript tradition of County Clare. The opening lecture will be given by Professor David Fitzpatrick of Trinity College, author of Politics and Irish Life 1913-21.
Cúirt an Mheán Oíche, the daily poetry readings have become a cherished part of the Summer School line up in recent years. This year’s featured poets are Medhb Mc Guckian, Micheal O’Siadhail, Colm Breathnach and Bríd Ní Mhóráin.
An evening show, Running Beast, intrigueingly described as a chamber-orchestra historical trad-rap, will be performed by award-winning actor/writer Donal O’Kelly to music by Celtic Music Prize‑winning composer Michael Holohan.
Local people are involved in every aspect of this school and participants really get a good opportunity to meet and get to know each other and the local community. The social side of the event is legendary - and famously exhausting! - so it certainly is not some dry academic event.
