New Year: Christ Church Bells
The traditional gathering place in Dublin for seeing in the New Year is at Christ Church Cathedral, where the famous old bells have been pealing out a welcome to the coming year for as long as anyone can remember.
Traditionally a 16 bell peal is sounded, sometimes as many as 19 and you can see a video of the bell ringers at work here, while this one gives a sense of how it is anticipated outside.
It's something of a party event, with well wrapped up revellers gathering outside waiting for the sound that signals the start of a long night of festivities. You'll need to get there early to grab a good spot and a small flask of something warming wouldn't be a bad idea either.
