The Phoenix Festival
This packed and very family friendly festival brings the streets of the midland town of Tullamore to life each July.
The focus is very much on the outdoors, with lots of street entertainers, a busking fextival and activities such as ballooning and bungee jumping available for the public.
Street entertainment in 2008 will feature jugglers, fireshows, stilt walkers and unicyclists among others, with Stagecraft Ireland, a contemporary circus company, and Cabaret Canoodle among those taking part. A juggling convention will bring masters of the art to Tullamore, not just to perform but also to hold a series of workshops.
Skateboarders have their own Skatejam, there will be fireworks and a gathering of customised cars will be held in Kilbride Plaza. Hot air ballooning has a history in Tullamore - it was the location of the world's first aviation disaster, a balloon crash in 1785. Things improved a lot since then and the balloons available for flights durng the festival are modern and safe. But be aware - flights are pricey at €250 each, albiet for up to 2 people.
Music will be everywhere, not just in the form of buskers but with live outdoor concerts and gigs in pretty much every pub and venue in town.
There will be barge trips on the Grand Canal, canoe demonstrations, and the Phoenix Market will include food stalls as well as clothes, jewellry and crafts.
Get along and enjoy!
