Irish Conker Championships
This annual event - 2008 will be it's ninth year - takes place on the Village Green in Freshford, where the surrounding Chestnut trees not only provide shelter but also the essential equipment for the events - a huge supply of conkers!
While it is a competitive event - the winner of the adult competition gets to represent Ireland in the World Conker Championships, which will take place this year in Northamptonshire in England - it is all held in a spirit of good humour and fun. There are competitions for all ages and those less experienced in the fine art of whacking their opponents conker can get in some practice before hand in a special training tent.
You don't need to bring anything other than the determination to enjoy yourself, as all equipment is provided on the day.
As well as the conker events there are stands selling local food and produce, pony rides and other entertainment for children, an art exhibition and a great restaurant serving meals home cooked by a hard working local committee.
While very much a local event - everyone for miles around will be there - visitors will get a great welcome and be quickly absorbed into the fun athmosphere of this very family oriented event.
