Clonakilty International Guitar Festival
The organisers of this festival set themselves a brief of bringing to Clonakilty some of the greatest guitarists in Ireland and, indeed, the world. It's a tall order, but they certainly hit the spot in their first three years and return in 2008 with a bigger and better event than ever.
Among the top acts in 2007 were be the critically acclaimed Dublin Guitar Quartet, who play eight-string and eleven string guitars in arrangements that would be impossible for standard guitars.
Eric Bell, a founding member of Thin Lizzy, Dave Geraghty formerly of The Rotators and local boy Bill Shanley, who grew up in a famous local music pub, was there too
The line up for 2008 has yet to be announced, but given that is it the 30th anniversary of the death of Jimmie Hendrix, whose original bass player Noel Redding lived in Clonakilty for many years, I think we can expect some sort of homage to the great man.
As well as the headline concerts there are workshops, gigs, guitar and photo exhibitions and a series of seminars on guitar making in and around the town. This is a musicians festival, and in previous years has been notable for the many guitarists who although not officially playing turn up just to see their peers in action - so you really never know who you might see there.
Although the link below is to the official website, it seems that the place to get the latest news about this festival is at MySpace .
