National Heritage Week
Heritage Week is a week long celebration of natural, artistic and built Heritage of Ireland during which many local and national heritage organisation hold special events throughout the country.
These events cover a wide range of interests, with everything from fairs to night-time bat walks, wildlife tours and lectures to music recitals, historical re-enactments to outdoor activities included. Many heritage sites and stately homes will offer free admission or special concessions during the week.
This years sees a special celebration of the importance of water in our heritage, featuring every aspect of the role of water, including wildlife and aquatic habitats, folklore, industrial heritage and archaeology.
September 1st has been designated as Water Heritage Day, and there is something happening that day on almost every stretch of water in and around the country.
There are far too may events happening to pick out any real highlights, so if you are in Ireland during this time it is well worth checking the Heritage week website to see what's happening in the parts of Ireland you will visit - there are certain to be many you will want to attend.
This is the only week of the year when a Heritage Card is not worth having - pretty much all the places included on it are free to enter anyway!
