Arvo PartNo details are available yet for 2009.

The 2008 festival honoured Arvo Pärt, an Estonian born composer now living in Berlin who is identified with a minimalist style of music, very often with sacred themes.

Those who believe they don't know Part's music may be surprised to learn that it was a Pärt composition which accompanied the post-911 scenes in Michael Moore's movie Farenheit 911 and he has written music for several other movies too.

However his best known works are settings for sacred texts, primarily those of the Russian Othodox Church, characterised by simple harmonies and rhythms reminiscent of plainsong or Gregorian chant.

The opening concert includes two of the choral works for which Pärt is best known, Credo and the Berliner Messe. The concert opens with a performance of  Lamentate for piano and orchestra. The RTE Philharmonic Orchestra and Choir will be conducted by fellow Estonian Tõnu Kaljuste, a renowned Pärt specialist.
