Bealtaine FestivalBealtaine is the May-time arts festival celebrating creativity in older age. It comprises a series of events taking place nationwide, independently organised by some 300 organisers drawn from the national arts institutions (like the IMMA and the Irish Film Institute), regional arts centres, public libraries, local authorities, care centres, active retirement and other community groups.

Basically there will be something going on in every part of Ireland, a dzzying number of events, exhibitions and workshops covering painting, crafts, dance, music, literature, drama and other arts activities.

The theme for this year’s festival is ‘Now strike your note’, a line from the Seamus Heaney poem ‘Station Island’:

"Take off from here. And don’t be so earnest,
so ready for the sackcloth and the ashes.
Let go, let fly, forget.
You’ve listened long enough. Now strike your note.
"

Among the many artists participating in the 2008 festival is the Liz Lerman Dance Exchange, an award-winning American company, which has opened up an extraordinary world of dance for older people through participation, workshops and performance.

The UK company Magic Me, working in partnership with Sligo Arts Office, bringing together young people (aged 9 ) and older people (55 ) for mutual benefit, learning and enjoyment.
