Blooomsday Festival 2009
Note: Details below refer to the previous event. Updated information for this year will be published here as soon as it becomes available.
Although called "Bloomsday", this celebration of the life and work of James Joyce, and in particular of his novel Ulysses, actually lasts for a whole week. It's pimarily based in the city, with events also taking place in Dundrum and Dun Laoghaire.
The Bloomsday Breakfast - a feast of bacon and sausage washed down by Guinness and served to the accompaniement of readings from Joyce - has now been spread over three days, with two sittings each morning, so no excuse not to go along. And no, you won't be required to eat the breakfast enjoyed by Leopold Bloom - with its plentiful offal, including roast heart, liver and mutton kidneys!
In 2008 well known Joycean David Norris staged his one man play at thePavilion Theatre in Dun Laoghaire, while Joyces Tower in Sandycovewill hosted readings by actor Barry McGovern from Ulysses.
Various outdoor readings take place accross the city, as well as guided tours of Joyce's Dublin. You can also opt to follow in Joyces footsteps yourself, by following the trail of 14 plaques embedded in the city's pavements, one of which is pictured above. A guide is available at the Joyce Centre.
Full details of the 2009 event have yet to be announced.
