Docklands Maritime Festival 2009
Note: Details below refer to the previous event. Updated information for this year will be published here as soon as it becomes available.
Taking place in the redeveloped docklands area in the centre of the city, this festival made its debut last year to enormous crowds and this year is likely to be even bigger and better.
Without question the highlight of the 2008 festival was the arrival in Dublin of a fleet of tall ships, including the Lord Nelson, the Kaskelot, Atlantis and Artemis as well as Irish ships the Jeanie Johston and the Asgard. Visitors had the chance to board these magnificent vessels and experience a small taste of life on the high seas.
There is always an array of free street entertainment also, with musical events including urban bass, traditional Irish tunes and swinging wartime jazz. George’s Dock is dedicated to entertainment just for kids – from puppet shows to carousels, helter skelters and make ‘n’ do activities.
The Maritime Festival market features over 50 colourful stalls offering a vast selection of food items and crafts from around Ireland and beyond.
While details of the 2009 festival have yet to be announced, this festival grows in size and variety each year and is definitely one for the diary if you are visiting Ireland at the beginning of June.
