Éigse Eatharlaí
Éigse Eatharlaí (pronounced Aig-sha Ah-her-lee) is a festival of Irish traditional music held annually in the gorgeous surroundings of the Glen of Aherlow in Co Tipperary.
This year the focus is on Sean-nós singing and dancing and the Irish language. For those unfamiliar with it, Sean-nós is a deeply traditional style of singing and dancing, usually performed solo and with a highly ornamented style.
All proceedings will take place in Irish, so for visitors who are interested in hearing the language used it's an interesting place to spend a few hours - it's nowadays quite rare to find events where English is not the only or predominant language in use. However their website has an English version and it's a friendly and relatively informal event, so people will be happy to speak English to non-Irish speaking visitors!
Participants in 2008 include flautist Catherine McEvoy, harpist Cormac DeBarra, fiddle player Máire Breathnach, singer Seosaimhín Ni Bheaglaoich and sean-nós dancer Máire Aine Ní Iarnáin. There will be music workshops for Fiddle, Harp, Button Accordion, Sean-nós Dancing, Uilleann pipes, Flute, Bodhrán and Sean-nós singing.
