John Hewitt International Summer School
The John Hewitt Summer School is a week of lectures, readings, discussions, writing, talks, drama, music & entertainment, held in Armagh in honour of John Harold Hewitt, a Belfast born poet, art historian and collector and political activist who died in 1987.
"Let there be No Wall" is the theme for 2008, a phrase taken from apoem by John Hewitt, a freethinking pacifist and egalitarian, who wasdedicated to dismantling the barriers that divide and rule.
Novelists,musicians, artists, poets, politicians and academics from everytradition, background and perspective, will gather to debate walls,borders, ghettos, “no-go areas” and all the divisions (physical,social, economic, ethnic and historic) that tell us how poorly thatlonged for liberty fares even now.
Among those attending in are Seamus Heaney, Billy Collins, Imtiaz Dharkar, Lisa Appignanesi, W.J. McCormack, Rita Duffy, Conor O’Clery, Maurice Riordan, Ruth Carr, Maurice Hayes, Joan Newmann, Jane Duran, Maureen Boyle… and many more. Comedian Kevin McAleer and traditional musicians Martin Hayes and Dennis Cahill are among those who will provide entertainment for the lighter side of the event.
