While public transport in Ireland can be expensive, there are many ways to save and this is especially true for those who are planning to use train or bus transport during a period of a week or more while touring.

How to save? It depends on whether you are travelling within Ireland only or are planning to visit other parts of Europe also.

Discounts for Students & Teachers

In spite of claims on the ISIC website – which issues student and teacher cards worldwide – discounts are not available to holders of these cards on either bus or rail services in Ireland.

Nor are the discounts at other attractions which the cards do give worth the price of the card, they are all ones which are easily and readily available using widely distributed free vouchers which you’ll pick up in hotels or hostels.

Unofficial Interrail and Eurail Ticket Sellers

If you are buying either Eurail or Interrail tickets online, be sure to use ONLY the official websites (linked to from here). Other quite official looking sites exist, and there are many sites which sell these tickets, but they are invariably sold at much higher prices.
