Cong, Co Mayo
It's justly famed for the beauty of both the castle and it's surroundings, and you know you are somewhere special as you drive up the long approach past the beautifully kept golf course, accross the old bridge over the River Cong and through the manicued gardens, before being finally greeted by the magnificent castle itself.
Inside it is all elegance and luxury, with wooden paneled walls, huge fireplaces with blazing fires, antiques and paintings all around and an attentive staff standing by at all times.
The bedrooms are very varied in size and shape as you would expect in such an old building and range from on the small side to palatial. All of them though are interesting, with beautiful furnishings, expensive linens, great bathrooms (some truly vast) and every possible convenience provided.
There are several restaurants, from the top rated George V Dining Room and Connaught Room, both serving very high quality food in opulant surroundings, to the informal and relaxed Cullan's Cottage a short stroll from the castle. The cellar bar is a lively spot with regular and very good traditional music sessions.
A myriad of activities are available to guests, from cruising Lough Corrib, which is right by the castle, to fishing, falconry (very popular!), horse-riding (extremely good horses and facilities), pony and trap trips, golf on the 9 hole parkland course, shooting or archery, and of course the grounds are a wonderful place to walk through and explore. There is also an excellent spa and fitness centre.
There are some less than perfect aspects. Some rooms are looking a little tired and worn and service, which for the most part is excellent, can occasionally fail to meet the standard you rightly expect in a hotel of this standard.
Perhaps surprisingly this is a great place to stay with kids. They are made feel very welcome and are well catered for within the many estate activities and really enjoy the freedom of exploring the grounds.
Rates guides are per room for 2 people, usually with
breakfast.
