Kingscourt, Co Cavan
A richly historic building in a lovely setting, Cabra has three different sorts of accommodation: in the main house, in a nicely converted courtyard and in a gate-lodge.
All are above the standard you would expect of a three star hotel (which this is), large, nicely decorated, with good bathrooms and facilities. Those in the house are more evocative of the past but those in the other buildings are larger and more modern.
There is a good restaurant in the hotel which though a little on the expensive side serves and well thought out menu featuring fresh local produce. Two small bars serve light snacks during the day. The hotel has its own 9 hole golf course in the grounds and guests are offered a free round of golf.
Dromoland it ain't, so don't expect unadulterated luxury, but for a reasonably priced stay in a castle, this is a great choice. Very popular for weddings at weekends, so possibly best to book a stay early in the week.
Rates guides are per room for 2 people, usually with
breakfast.
