Glaslough, Co Monaghan
It flaunts its eccentricity - you will either adore it or loath it - but there is good management and real luxury here too.
The Leslie family have lived here for three centuries and welcome paying guest now as they once welcomed friends. There is no reception desk, dinner is like a private party with drinks beforehand in the drawing room and service in the original dining room, complete with the original furniture, some, it must be said, the worse for wear, but the food is excellent.
The bedrooms are all different, decorated in extravagant style and all have private bathrooms, some of which are enormous and have almost pool sized baths. There are no clocks, TVs or telephones.
The Castle has an extraordinary history, the list of famous guests is as long as your arm, lots of people rave about it and return again and again - others hate it and cannot wait to get away. We like it a lot - make up your own mind!!
