Glin, Co Limerick
The home of the Knight of Glin and his family, who have called it home for more than seven centuries, the castle, at the heart of a 500 acre estate and surrounded by beautiful gardens, is a really spendid sight.
It looks more like a large manor house than what most people think of as a castle, and inside has the feel of an elegant private country home - which it is, this is definitely not a hotel!
It is magnificently decorated, furnished with the owners exceptional collection of furniture and paintings, mostly Irish, and the wonderful decorative plasterwork typical of its era (the current building is Georgian).
There are 15 guest bedrooms, each with a private bathroom, are all different, all lovely and all huge. Each is decorated with style and panache, with antique furniture, paintings on the walls and lovely bedlinen. Some have four poster beds, all have lovely views over either the river or the gardens or both.
Three lovely and inviting drawing rooms are available for guest to relax in, beside roaring fires and in great comfort.
Although very grand, it is not at all stuffy or formal, there is a relaxed easy-going ambiance and the staff are friendly and really pamper their guests. If the Knight, a gregarious and friendly man, is in residence he is happy to talk to guests, sharing his fascinating family history and the stories of the many wonderful objects in the castle.
Dinner is available and is a treat. Not only is the dining room a beautiful room, but the food is wonderfully, carefully prepared using fine, fresh local ingredients, many in fact grown in the Castle's walled garden.
As Glin is not much of a town and there are few restaurants within easy reach it is recommended that you do book dinner when reserviing accommodation - it's no sacrifice, believe me!
The Castle is also available, fully staffed, for private rental.
Rates guides are per room for 2 people, usually with
breakfast.
