Lough Eske, Co. Donegal

It's probably the most beautifully located hotel in Ireland, on the shores of Lough Eske, with mountains rising behind and peace all around and it is one of Ireland's most lovely hotels too.

This has been a hotel for about 20 years but a recent renovation has seen it transformed into a place of almost decadent luxury. Forty bedrooms were added and they are marvellous, vast, very luxurious, many with four poster beds and with huge bathrooms with jacuzzi baths and rainfall showers.

The overall feel is unrestrained luxury and they are certainly wonderfully relaxing rooms to return to after a busy day outdoors. However the older rooms in the original building have better views over the lake and though not as large are just as comfortable and luxurious.

There is a very high quality restaurant where a French chef prepares classic dishes using local produce where possible, to very good effect. The bar serves less formal food and in the evening there is a pianist on hand to provide pleasant unobtrusive entertainment.

This is an exceptional hotel and a pleasure to stay in. If you are in Donegal do what you can to make your budget stretch to at least one night here, you won't regret it.
