Pontoon, Co. Mayo
If you want to get away from it all and absorb yourself in learning a new skill, then this is where you want to be - between two lakes in a remote and very beautiful part of the West of Ireland much less visited than many. The hotel is family run and though not at the luxury end of the market is very comfortable and full of surprises, all of them pleasant.
The bedrooms are mostly large, though there are a few which are a little on the small side, and most have fantastic views over either Lough Conn or Lough Cullin, both of which are right outside the door. All rooms are simply but comfortably decorated and furnished and have good private bathrooms.
There are two restaurants, the more formal Twin Lakes and the bistro style Terrace Restaurant. Both have really very excellent food, far better than you would expect in a hotel of this standard and worthy of any 4 star hotel. There is as you might expect an emphasis on fish, and if you have been lucky during the day they will be happy to cook your catch for you.
While this is a remote location there is no shortage of things to do. Boats and tackle are available for hire and ghillies can also be organised if you want to fish on ether of the lakes, both of which are renowned trout and salmon fisheries. At the in-house fishing school absolute beginners will quickly learn to tie knots, select flies and cast like a pro!
Other schools and classes are available also. The cookery school has an emphasisis on using seasonal ingredients and you will learn to prepare meals, desserts and other delight and then get to eat them!
At the painting school the ever patient and encouragine Pat Goff will open your eyes to the unique light and colour in this area and will hone your technique whether you are a beginner or a seasoned weilder of the brush.
Because many of the residents are happily engaged during the day on one or other of the courses there is a very friendly almost clubby atmosphere in the hotel as friendships are forged and contacts made. People tend to return again and again too, and often stay for quite long periods.
If you are looking for total luxury this may not be for you, but if you want to return from your stay relaxed, rejuvinated and with very pleasant memories, then it is just the place you want.
